Since 1995 we have provided support to a wide range of projects across the globe; from the rehabilitation of orphaned bear cubs in the Russian Far East to surveying wild Spectacled bears in Ecuador.
As the organization has grown we have focused more intensely on the Sun bears and Asiatic black bears of South-east Asia and the Sloth bears of India. By creating partnerships that are tailored to each individual country and situation we have been able to support a wide range of projects in our six priority countries; Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam.
Despite these countries being geographically close to one another, the threats to bears vary widely and as such our responses encompass a wide range of strategies including environmental awareness, sustainable livelihoods, increased enforcement and research and protection of wild bear populations. Our support ranges from direct intervention on-the-ground to providing much-needed funds to local organisations carrying out bear conservation work in line with our goals.
Main focused programs:
-Bear cub rescue: One of our biggest challenges is rehabilitating rescued bears and providing care for their entire lives, which can be up to 30 years.
-Protecting wild bears: The first step is improve the protection of bears in the wild and develop a realistic long-term strategy for the rescue and rehabilitation of confiscated bears. This will enable us to monitor wild bear populations and identify areas that could one day support the release of bears back to the wild.
-Education and awareness: Our teams aim to improve attitudes towards bears and encourage sustainable practices to protect them in their natural habitats. We work locally to raise awareness of environmental issues affecting bears through education initiatives and events and provide tailor-made schedules packed with engaging and interactive lessons, games and activities centred on wildlife, the environment as well as the basics of conservation and sustainability.
-Stop the suffering: As long as there are bears in need, we will continue to work to stop the suffering of bears worldwide. As well as bear rescue and rehabilitation of bears for their entire lives.
