About Xploreo’s Custom Programs

Xploreo seeks to usher a new and innovative business model into the market for short term study, internship and volunteer abroad programs. We offer programs for individual students as well as services for groups of students traveling overseas on short term custom study abroad programs. Our programs focus on Spanish, French and Italian speaking countries.

Xploreo’s Responsibility as a Custom Program Provider

As a custom program provider, Xploreo will be responsible for all the logistical arrangement of study abroad programs, creating and customizing itineraries according to the curriculum of the course, the needs and budgets of the groups. We will also help arrange for cultural activities, educational excursions and recruit guest speakers, thereby, providing deeper insight into the chosen topics and helping students get the most of out of what the course has to offer to them.

Carl Jaramillo

Carl, the founder of Xploreo, is a serial entrepreneur in the international education space.  Prior to founding Xploreo, Carl founded another study abroad company in China a decade ago.  He also serves as an adviser to the New York-based Mid Atlantic Fund.  For his undergraduate coursework, Carl studied at Cornell University, which he completed in a record time of two years.  He pursued graduate study at the University of London and at Teacher College, Columbia University.

What Are Custom Programs?

Custom programs are study abroad experiences lead by a high school, college and university faculty member. However, this model of study abroad is relatively less popular in other regions including Latin America and Europe. In contrast to the faculty-led programs that are conducted in the US and China, the exchange programs lie at the heart of the model of a typical study abroad program in Europe and Latin America. This involves students traveling to foreign universities for a semester or year and engaging in international experiences. In the US and China, as an integral part of faculty-led programs, students travel in groups to their selected international destinations. Their professors and teachers chaperone them and teach them selected courses throughout the overseas programs. The length of these programs typically varies from one week to five weeks, with some trips longer than this. These programs are a combination of local language classes, volunteer or internship opportunities, cultural activities and academic excursions to places of historic and cultural interest. These programs most typically are conducted during school vacations, such as the academic winter break, spring break or summer break.

Academic Goals of Custom Programs

One of the fundamental purposes of such faculty-led experiences is to enable the participant students to travel internationally for a short period of time and participate in unique experiences beyond their own comfort zones.  They are exposed to a brand new culture, understand a broader range of perspectives and cultural differences, develop the skills and tolerance to be a part of the multicultural, global society and in some cases, also have the scope to practice foreign languages.

Factors Affecting the Program Budget

After the faculty determines the length and destination of the program, the academic content of the program is structured and the budget is finalized. The budget usually depends on the following parameters:  length, destination and academic content of the program. The final program price covers all possible expenses including air and ground transportations, accommodations, meals, expenses of the faculty members, fees and miscellaneous expenses pertaining to personal support and emergencies.

Why use a provider?

There are many benefits of using a program provider for custom programs. Here’s an approximate breakdown:

  • Custom program providers are in-country experts who have a deeper knowledge of the countries that the groups are interested in exploring. They make sure the students have a memorable, enriching as well as academically, professionally and intellectually stimulating experience. Local program providers can help provide new ideas or insights as well as opportunities to connect with the host community more easily.
  • These program providers may have ideas for activities or experiences that teachers are not aware of. That will further enrich the students’ overall experience, helping them value other cultures, cultural diversity and connect with other people on their levels. Custom program providers can make this magic happen and turn around any situation that may not otherwise work to the advantage of the group, due to their language barriers and lack of knowledge of the culture of their host country.
  • Sometimes reality can be harsher without any external help. Custom program providers can bridge the gap that may exist between the group and the people of their host country. The providers tailor the programs not only to meet the expectations of the group. They also enable them to integrate and engage with their host culture more smoothly so that they don’t just “learn by osmosis” (learn by being mere tourists in a foreign country). The group must make a conscious effort to become residents of their host country, at least for a temporary period of time and then only, will they be able to understand and therefore, interact with a foreign culture on a deeper level. With the support and guidance of program providers, a program can go beyond mere “educational tourism” and address this challenge more effectively and efficiently.
  • Using a custom program provider allows teachers to focus solely on teaching, learning outcomes and what the students can gain out of their study abroad experience, which is more than just visiting a new country . An extra hand, some help with logistical arrangement and useful advice in times of crisis will always come in handy.
  • Emergencies abroad can pose a real threat to the safety and comfort of students mostly due to cultural unfamiliarity and language barriers. Custom program providers have their own set of crisis management guidelines that help ensure that all the bases are covered and the situations, arising out of a crisis, are addressed immediately and effectively. Although the teachers have their own set of crisis management tactics, external help from the program providers during crises can really help put their minds at rest.
  • Working with a custom program provider means that the teachers will know that they will always have a backup support system. Although all students go through an orientation way before their departures, orientation is an ongoing process. It still continues while the students are in their host country and they can reach out to their in-country program providers any time they want for more information and suggestions. If they are in a sticky situation, they can turn to their in-country program providers via emails or phone for guidance and assistance.

Program providers exist to make the experience of studying abroad easier and more meaningful both for students and teachers.
